Built around a fully-discrete R2R ladder, the Druid converts digital data into analog waveforms through a precise network of resistors rather than a high-speed modulation process. Each resistor contributes a tiny part of the signal, forming a sound that feels natural, human, and grounded in something older than silicon. This DAC does not compute. It communes.
Thank you! This encourages us a lot and is great to hear. If you feel comfortable, we’d love for you to share images and any op-amp rolling notes you might have. The community would enjoy that.
Me too! I have a Merlin and Gremlin with a Druid on the way with its own Gremlin. I’m quite curious to compare the two side by side - either comparing the DACs, or comparing different tubes in the Gremlins.
I just received my Apos Druid DAC this morning, and was excited to open the box, unpack it, and hook it up to see & hear this good-looking new audio device. One problem though; it appears that there’s no way to connect my Bluesound Node 2i to this DAC.
After reading some info here it seems that Bluesound players don’t do audio passthrough from the USB port (unless to other select Bluesound modules), so it seems like it may not be natively compatible.
I remember looking at some Bluesound streamers and this limitation was something that kept me away from them. There may be a workaround, my initial search was quite quick.
Here’s my weird little setup. The source is a weird old CS-400C industrial keyboard I’ve retrofitted with a screen and RPi4 along with an Arduino that scans the key codes and sends the Pi something it recognizes as a keyboard. Just swapped the Merlin for the Druid today and I love it. I’m actually shocked I hear any difference, but there’s certainly some, but it’s small. A bit warmer sounding, but could also just be that the highs are more rolled off or mids are more pronounced. I’ll do some real listening this week with some actual thoughts on the sound plus a better comparison. For the price though, another stellar addition. I’m excited to try swapping out the op amps as well.
I (also) have a connectivity issue with my new Druid. The product description states it has a USB-B connector while the unit (and the product photos show it) actually has a USB-C. I didn’t think it would make any difference with the right cable, but my streamer with a USB-A connector (Eversolo A8) does not see the Druid. My MacBook Air with USB-C ports does see the Druid, but that’s not how I intend to use the DAC.
Is there a fix or workaround? Would I need something like a Topping HS02? Not that I want to buy another product, but would that work if there’s not a simpler solution?
Hm I think the USB type-B is a typo. Thank you for flagging that. @kunal@tom_at_apos can you confirm? (edit: yup it’s been fixed. thanks again)
I’ve not tried a streamer before, so forgive me for being basic, but I assume you’ve tried the easy stuff like setting the output on the A8, power cycling things, and trying a different cable? If you use the USB A-C cable with your streamer to your macbook does it see the streamer (if that’s even possible)?
Otherwise, hopefully Tom or someone will be more helpful when they get in tomorrow
Pretty much tried all that, but will verify again. I also tried connecting from a Raspberry Pi USB-A (Pi Core Player) with both of the A-C cables I tried, without luck. I’ll try things again today, but would be interested to know if others have successfully connected a streamer, and if so did it have a USB A or C on its end.
Will do a bit later and will report back. The Eversolo USB out selection was grayed out, suggesting no connection, but I’ll verify again and with comparison to a different external DAC.
Very happy to report it now works. One of my USB-A to USB-C cables does not work, and I thought I had tried a second. Another one now works, though, so I’m excited again to continue listening.
Thank you all for your time and help!
P.S. I found another known good cable, and it will not connect (stays grayed out on streamer). The cable that does work is very short and so connects to a USB-A to USB-A female extender. Puzzling. I can still post pics upon request. I might also try it on a WiiM Mini streamer I normally use elsewhere.
