SMSL T2 VMV MQA CD Player Digital Media Center

The SMSL T2 VMV: where old-school CD charm shakes hands with the latest digital media wizardry. It's not just a player—it's a sleek hunk of tech that makes your audio shelf look like it's got a black belt in sophistication.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://apos.audio/products/smsl-t2-vmv-mqa-cd-player-digital-media-center

This is advertised as a CD Player. Is it not more correctly a CD transport as it lacks analog outputs and will require an external DAC to become a true CD Player? The front panel even says CD Transport so the advertising people seem to want to “muddy the water” it in an attempt to make it seem much more than a PL200T. Industry wide a CD playback device without a DAC are called CD Transports and those with a DAC and analog outputs are called players. Am I wrong? I wonder how many of these are getting returned by people who think they are buying a player only to find out they are just transports? The one review I read says it can play all types of CDs. Can it play SACDs that don’t have an imbedded regular CD track?

Good questions. Let me ask one of the knowledgeable ones over here and get back to you

Okay, we’ve updated the title and thanks for flagging this. Their official listing calls it a “CD player” so we were just matching that, but this may be a translation thing because I see it called a couple other things like “music system hub” too.

I’m not sure where exactly the line in the sand is drawn, but your definition of the two seems accurate. No internal DAC, no analog outs = transport.

We can’t find anything about SACD support, but I’ll see if we can get an official response just to be sure. In the meantime we’ve updated the specs to be more specific.

Thanks again, and let you know if we find out anything new/interesting.

Thanks for listening. If you ever get one returned that you can let go at a discount let me know. In return I’ll do a real review on it to make it seem more appealing, assuming of course that it’s decent. I’m on the fence between this and the Shanling CDT90 which seems to have similar specs and many excellent reviews.

Will do :+1:

And did confirm with SMSL that there’s no SACD support on this one.

Let me see if anyone here has tried both the SMSL and the Shanling and can give any feedback.
